European Leagues Weekend Roundup

There were some big results across European Leagues this weekend and it’s no surprise that things are heating up as we get closer to the business end of the season.

The title race in France still stands out among all our leagues but things are still tight in Portugal and Spain. Should be an interesting end to the season. Let’s see what happened over the weekend.

Primeira Liga(25) and Eredivisie(Round 26)

Still not many changes to talk about in Portugal as Benfica, Porto and Sporting Lisbon all won. Benfica still hold a four point lead over their big rivals, Porto, but we are getting closer to what could be a title-deciding game between the two.

PSV Eindhoven still has an 11 point lead in the league as they Ajax and Feyenoord all won over the weekend.(Same sentence as last week) The race for the last European spot is an interesting battle between AZ Alkmaar, Vitesse Arnhem(Chelsea 2.0), PEC Zwolle and Herenveen though.

Ligue 1(Round 29)

So I realize last week that I presented the big game as Paris Saint-Germain vs. Lyon when it was actually Marseille vs. Lyon. Not sure what happened there. It was a pretty entertaining game and either side could have won but it was tie in the end. PSG lost but still kept second place and but now Marseille have to watch out for Monaco below them in fourth with a game in hand. The bane of Arsenal won over the weekend, as did Lille. Things still looking tight in France

Serie A(Round 27)

Since the title race is now done and dusted in the Serie A, things in the race for Europe have heated up. Five points now separate second place Roma from sixth place Sampdoria. Roma lost, to Sampdoria, and were gladly joined by AC Milan and Napoli. Inter Milan tied their game while Juventus won.

Bundesliga(Round 25)

Things are pretty similar in Germany. Ten points separate third from eighth and, while that may seem a lot, things can change at any minute. Plus there’s still the possibility of a Borussia Dortmund resurgence even if they did falter with a draw. Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen both won while Schalke drew their game.

La Liga(Round 27)

In Spain, both the title race and European race offer some intrigue. “El Clasico” is this weekend and that game will have a big impact on the title. Barcelona and Real Madrid won to retain first and second place but Atletico Madrid dropped out of third after a tie and Valencia’s win. Sevilla also won over the weekend so it remains to be seen who will end up where in the European spots. Villarreal is still in the mix and Malaga has an outside chance.

Premier League(Round 29)

Aand just like that, the Premier League does it again. Arsenal and second place seems weird so close together in a sentence but that’s where we’re headed after their win and Manchester City’s loss to Burnley. Chelsea drew to pick up a six point lead with one game in hand while Manchester United brought back the old times by smashing Tottenham. Liverpool won as well so things are still very much up in the air heading into the final part of the season.
