Tottenham and Stoke City both suffered 1-0 losses in their first games this season. With points at a premium for two sides that finished in the top 10 last season, this game will be extremely important. Both sides will feel they could have gotten more from their losses to Manchester United and Liverpool and will look to make the most of their opponent’s shortcomings. Here are five key matchups for this game.

5. Glen Johnson vs. Nacer Chadli

Glen Johnson put in a solid game in his debut for Stoke City, almost scoring a goal as well, but he was helped by Liverpool’s lack of cohesion in attack. Nacer Chadli will provide a much different threat to the English veteran with his intelligent runs and strength on the ball. If Johnson loses his concentration, something he’s been accused of throughout his career, then Stoke may be punished.

4. Harry Kane vs. Geoff Cameron

All eyes will be on Harry Kane for much of the season and this game is no different. The Tottenham forward didn’t threaten Manchester United too much in his first game and will expect to do better against Stoke. Geoff Cameron is the will most likely be tasked with stopping him. The American defender has decent pace and strength that can put Kane off his game.

3. Erik Lamela vs. Marc Muniesa

Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino could be tempted to start Erik Lamela in this game. Marc Muniesa, a center back by trade, may be required to fill in at left back if Erik Pieters doesn’t recover from his knock. Lamela has not been at his best so far in the Premier League, but he has the pace and dribbling skills to take advantage of that matchup.

2. Mame Biram Diouf vs. Toby Alderweireld

Mame Biram Diouf didn’t score in either game between these sides last season, but his contributions unsettled a poor Tottenham defense. He did have an assist in one outing and his mixture of pace and power make him a handful. Toby Alderweireld was brought in to help stabilize the Tottenham defense. If he can limit Diouf’s impact then Tottenham will have a good chance of success.

1. Christian Eriksen vs. Glenn Whelan

The battle between Christian Eriksen and Glenn Whelan will be interesting. Eriksen is Tottenham’s prime creative force, and if he doesn’t get going Spurs are much less effective in the attack. Glenn Whelan’s ability to spring attackers from deep is an important element to Stoke’s game. Eriksen’s importance to Tottenham is greater, so Stoke will have a better chance even if Whelan sacrifices his long balls to stop the Dane.
