5 Key Matchups For Manchester City vs. Chelsea In EPL Week 2 – RantSports.

My piece for RantSports on Manchester City vs. Chelsea.

A game between two title contenders this early in the season can be decided by the smallest of margins. The result will have an effect on the title race, so a tight game should be expected. Both games between these sides last season ended in 1-1 draws. Manchester City have the edge, with three points to Chelsea’s one, but there’s no telling what will happen. Here’s a look at which individual battles could have an effect on the outcome.

5. Nemanja Matic vs. David Silva

David Silva is one of the most underrated stars in the league, but he has the ability to take over games like this. The Spaniard may spend his time moving from central to wide positions or vice versa, but he will no doubt be closely followed by Nemanja Matic when in the middle. Matic will likely be the more creative force from deep for the Blues, but if he’s too caught up defending they’ll struggle to control the match.

4. Eden Hazard vs. Bacary Sagna

Eden Hazard is still Chelsea’s main attacking threat, and they will look to isolate him against Bacary Sagna. Sagna was arguably the Premier League’s best right back at one time but will have his hands full against Hazard. He will get some help from his winger, Jesus Navas, in various situations, but a one-on-one between him and the Chelsea No. 10 won’t bode well for his side.

3. Raheem Sterling vs. Branislav Ivanovic

If Manchester City took note of Chelsea’s first match against Swansea then they’ll be keen to put Raheem Sterling against Branislav Ivanovic often. The Serbian defender was beaten multiple times by Jefferson Montero and faces a similar opponent in Sterling. Sterling was bought to add an extra dimension to City’s attack, and if he makes the most of his dribbling skills against Ivanovic he’ll answer a lot of critics.

2. Yaya Toure vs. Kurt Zouma

Yaya Toure is a powerful presence that few can match in the modern game, and he could dominate the midfield if allowed. Jose Mourinho’s preference for caution will most likely see him use Kurt Zouma in midfield to match the Ivorian physically and unsettle him. City have a harder time in games when Toure fails to get going so snuffing out his threat will be key for Chelsea.

1. Vincent Kompany vs. Diego Costa

It should be quite the individual battle when these two meet on Sunday. Vincent Kompany will be full of confidence after a goal and a relatively solid display in the game against West Bromwich Albion. The Belgian defender will not be afraid to go toe-to-toe with Diego Costa as the Chelsea man loves to get physical. Goals aren’t in short supply for Chelsea, but they need Costa to win this battle to get the three points.
