It’s a nice idea but unlikely. Part of the reason Alex Song left was because he became too cavalier in midfield and didn’t focus on the defensive side of things. It does seem like he curbed that last season with West Ham. Also, for the writer, Song wasn’t purchased as a central defender at Barcelona. He was to play defensive midfield, just like Mascherano before him, but injuries and his versatility meant he did get selected in central defense from time to time. Plus there’s the small matter of trying to replace Sergio Busquets. If Mascherano wasn’t going to replace Sergio Busquets then Song surely wouldn’t have either. To be honest, I’m not even sure what Barcelona were thinking when they bought Song despite all his qualities.
