Swansea City and Manchester United face each other on Sunday with some interesting individual battles in store. Manchester United have yet to drop points this season, but Swansea has arguably been a better side overall. Both sides will expect to be tested in key areas as key performers look to step up for their sides. Here are five key matchups when Swansea City face Manchester United.

5. Chris Smalling vs. Bafetimbi Gomis

Chris Smalling has emerged as the physical leader of a solid Manchester United defense. He will face his stiffest test this season with Swansea’s in-form striker Bafetimbi Gomis. Powerful, quick and with good movement, Gomis has all the attributes to make it a tough night for Smalling. He’s scored in each of Swansea’s three games this season, so whoever wins this battle gives their side a big advantage.

4. Memphis Depay vs. Kyle Naughton

Memphis still hasn’t gotten off the mark in the Premier League but his skill is evident. If United need a bit of flair in the attacking third, then he’s the go-to option. Kyle Naughton moved from Spurs to Swansea for regular playing time and finds himself facing a good test here. Two young players with lots to prove should make for a good individual battle.

3. Jonjo Shelvey vs. Bastian Schweinsteiger

At first glance you would be hard-pressed to consider this a fair battle. Schweinsteiger, a World Cup winner, versus Shelvey, a player who has barely featured for England. This midfield battle will be key though, as even if United shuts down Gylfi Sigurdsson, Shelvey has shown so far this season he can be a creative force from deep. Schweinsteiger will play a similar role for United so it will be interesting to see who cancels out who.

2. Jefferson Montero vs. Matteo Darmian

Jefferson Montero looks set for a big season with Swansea. The Ecuadorian winger has been in great form, showing confidence while taking on and beating his opponents. Matteo Darmian has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water and is an extremely capable defender. Darmian hasn’t gone forward too much this season and will be focused on Montero unlike any of his opponents so far. We’ll see if the Ecuadorian can handle the special attention.

1. Andre Ayew vs. Luke Shaw

Andre Ayew has shown his ability to get into goalscoring positions for Swansea and is very capable of finishing off chances. The Ghanaian midfielder also comes inside to help link play and puts in a good shift defensively when needed. Luke Shaw has plenty of energy down the left but will need to be smart tactically to stop Ayew. It’s a matter of who can occupy who the most in the opposition half when these two duel it out.
