How Will England and Roy Hodgson Cope Without Danny Welbeck at Euro 2016? | Bleacher Report

I think Eric Dier has to play regardless so it’s just a matter of who Hodgson thinks would have a better impact off the bench. I do think Rooney should still start due to his experience, can always be taken off if need be. The Kane/Vardy partnership up top with the diamond should be just fine or a 4-2-3-1 with Sterling and either Lallana or Barkley in one of the wide positions might work as well with Rooney at the 10. Welbeck is more experienced than all these players so that’s a blow but there’s enough talent to make things work.

Still not entirely a fan of Wilshere’s inclusion even as an Arsenal but we’ll see what happens. Same with Rashford as there’s already enough forwards.

I think he should go with one of the outright wing options, either Albrighton or Zaha. Whoever comes in is unlikely to be a starter as they are well covered at forward and have options such as Lallana and Sterling ahead of them.

I think Hodgson will find a way to fit Rooney into the side, especially if really is considering bringing Jack Wilshere along. I think it will be a 4-2-3-1 with one of Alli, Barkley and Lallana coming on for Rooney. I don’t think you can leave the experience of Rooney on the bench, especially in such a tricky group. And he’s less likely to change the game coming off the bench as opposed to one of the younger players.

Erm. Need to take Rashford? No, they don’t. The author already suggest three barriers to any potential playing time in Vardy, Kane and Sturridge. I don’t know why he dismissed Welbeck from that category when he’s been decent enough since his return from injury and he’s more experienced than anyone not named Rooney or Walcott as far as attacking options go. Yes, Welbeck can play wide and might just do that but he would still be ahead of Rashford centrally.

So, no. England doesn’t need to take another “Oh this guy played well and has potential” player. Another full season with Manchester United then he can work his way into the 2020 World Cup plans.

Great points here by the author. There’s definitely room for excitement with this current crop of Enlish players. Not much world-class talent, if any at all, but plenty of young talent finally getting the much-needed international experience.

England may just be better off with Rooney coming off the bench. Unless he’s played as a No.10 behind one of either Kane or Welbeck. It will be interesting to see what Roy Hodgson does in this round of internationals.

Are they, though? I guess they are a solid dark horse but things could go seriously wrong as there is still a lot for Roy Hodgson to consider with selections and tactics. The articles below note that pretty well.

It’s not really a problem though. If Hodgson wants to play a certain way then he should keep that but at least he knows he has Harry Kane on the bench to change things. England still can’t dominate games in possession against better teams so going about things on the break is the best bet.

I think we all know the answer to that. There is a lot of talent in the English squad but you compare it to other European sides and their options and you feel less confident about England’s chances. The number of English players in the Premier League is definitely too low.
