I think Italy, England, Portugal and Croatia are more dark horses than contenders. Too much issues with all of those sides. Italy don’t convince, Portugal are too Ronaldo-dependent, Croatia hasn’t put it all together and England have a lot less experience than usual. Still interesting to see how they all do during this break.

Seems fitting considering the disappointing end to England’s recent Euro-21 campaign.(They were the bottom of the group even with a win)
Definitely like the comment about English young prodigies being either over-hyped and over-exposed or ignored. Not the same elsewhere in the top European leagues. Only probably the Serie A is similar in terms of a lack of consistent young talent.

England progress under Roy Hodgson hard to judge one year after Brazil | Daniel Taylor | Football | The Guardian
Agreed. This side is still in progress. Euro 2016 will be a good test and, more importantly, a good chance to gain some experience. Not much should be expected as they have had little to test themselves again. The goal is the 2018 World Cup.

Interesting piece. Too young to have any recollection of these games beyond the highlights available and so forth but I did see a good documentary on how English fans were at that tournament.

Maybe so. Some good points there but they don’t have the leaders the previous generation had. At least, not yet. I think Wayne Rooney has been a decent captain but its still weird to put those two words in the same sentence.
I think this England side can be good though. Just need the right manager.

England’s pain healed with better coaches, not the quotas of Greg Dyke | Paul Wilson | Football | The Guardian
Quotas aren’t the end all be all, true but I was there was a bit more depth about why coaches are the answer. Still an interesting read though.

Everybody’s starting the rebuilding process, and football can only reap the benefits.

Absolutely great article, or articles rather, here. An interesting look at some of football’s most historic national sides.
