As always, a great piece from Jonathan Wilson. Don’t see what all the fuss is about from commenters. Keyboard warriors coming out I guess. I’m never going to like teams that set up to defend or stifle and weirdly enough I don’t really dislike it either but I have a better appreciation for it. You can’t fault a team for doing what they believe is best for them to win. As the author states, in this instance Chelsea reverted to pragmatic displays when fatigue kicked in. They really shouldn’t have been fatigued in the first place though.

Looking forward to the African Cup of Nations. Tough draw for Ghana but maybe Avram Grant can perform some magic. (I’ll wait for the snickering to die down)

Just kidding, I think Grant will be fine. He did take Chelsea to the Champions League final after all, and he does have international experience with his native Israel. Should be interesting.

We’ll look more in-depth at the African Cup of Nations as it gets nearer.

I’m glad the 2015 African Cup of Nations will go ahead, and interested to see how well thing are organized given the short time period. The only thing I don’t like about Africa’s showpiece tournament is that it’s in the middle of the season but, as pointed out, there’s reason for that.

With Nigeria out, I’m even more interested in speculating whether this tournament will provide a positive for African football after the, mostly, disastrous 2014 World Cup outings. Nigeria’s the only team from the World Cup participants not to make it to the tournament and that’s probably indicative of more problems in that federation.

As for Morocco, whether they opted out due to prejudice, pragmatism or otherwise, we’ll see what the full consequences are in due time.

If you are really interested in tactics then this piece, and almost any from Jonathan Wilson, should interest you. He is, after all, the author of Inverting the Pyramid. If you haven’t read that yet, then read it now.
