Sterling Liverpool negotiations reveal intriguing debate who owes whom – ESPN FC.

Great piece here with some very interesting points brought up.

As the author states, we don’t want to get too hung up on the economics part of the story, whether or not Raheem Sterling should get a bump in pay, but the more interesting thing to look at is the who owes whom question.

I still have to speak on the economic part and say that I think a bump from a reported 35,000 pounds a week to 120,000 pounds a week is ludicrous for a 20-year-old who, though he has massive potential and is a big part of the team, hasn’t won anything yet. And there’s the possibility, however remote, that the train may fall off the tracks and it becomes money wasted. A pay rise is fine but I’d agree with the author’s translations from Brendan Rodgers that Sterling’s agents are going too far.

As for the who owes whom question. I’d agree with the author again on this and there’s a good point made with the comparison of Harry Kane and Marco Reus signing new deals. Contract situations like these involving young players  go both ways.

Liverpool has developed Sterling and given him a chance, due to necessity, and he responded by showing he’s a great talent. With Brendan Rodgers likely to stay in charge for some time and Liverpool making steps to becoming a force again Sterling is in a good place to get ample playing time which I don’t think would occur outside of England, and possibly not even there if he’s even considering Manchester City. Wouldn’t it make sense to leave the big “Hey, you owe me” negotiations until the time when you lead the club to an FA Cup, or Premier League or even the Champions League semifinal?

I think he’ll sign eventually but it’s a bit much to be asking what he or, more likely, his representatives are reportedly asking.
